Amid the surging copper demand driven by the expansion of AI data centers and power grids, LS Cable & System is ramping up its eco-friendly copper material and resource circulation businesses.
LS Cable & System announced on the 12th that its subsidiary, Korea Advanced Materials, has completed its Gunsan plant and begun mass production of eco-friendly advanced materials including recycled copper and CuFlake.
Through this investment, LS Cable & System will establish a resource-circulating supply chain from eco-friendly materials to cable production, the first in the domestic cable industry. The company also plans to expand its North American value chain through cooperation with major affiliates such as LS GreenLink, Gaon Cable, LS Eco Energy, and LS Eco Advanced Materials.
Korea Advanced Materials was established in 2023 to strengthen LS Cable & System's expertise in the materials business, and is built upon the copper processing technology the company accumulated over the previous 60 years. The Gunsan plant produces eco-friendly advanced materials, including recycled copper, the new copper foil material CuFlake, high-purity oxygen-free copper, and copper alloys.
Recycled copper is produced from resources recovered from waste cables, and can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional mining. By meeting the stricter eco-friendly material and carbon emission standards of advanced regions such as Europe, the company will bolster its competitiveness in the global cable and battery markets.
CuFlake is a first-of-its-kind copper foil material developed by LS Cable & System. It uses copper flakes instead of traditional copper wire, which simplifies the manufacturing process. This innovative material reduces manufacturing costs and energy consumption while enhancing eco-friendliness and the stability of raw material supply.
Korea Advanced Materials is also looking to construct a plant near LS GreenLink in Virginia, US. The company plans to expand its presence in the North American market by linking with the LS Cable & System affiliate supply chain to further strengthen its resource-circulation business structure.
"We will expand our eco-friendly resource circulation business and strengthen our capability to supply the high-value-added materials essential for the electrification era," said Jeon Ik-soo, CEO of Korea Advanced Materials.
